Sri Lanka achieved the fastest win in World Cup history when they reached their target (37) off just 4.4 overs against Canada in a 2003 match which lasted just 140 balls. Canada were all out for 36 in 18.4 overs.
Sri Lanka’s match against Kenya in Kandy in 1996 was record breaking for a number of reasons. While Sri Lanka registered the highest World Cup total of 398-5, the 652 runs scored in the game was the highest match run aggregate in World Cup history. Kenya made 254-7.
Sri Lanka achieved the highest score batting second to win a World Cup game when they smashed 313 for seven in New Plymouth, New Zealand to beat Zimbabwe by three wickets in 1992. They also hold the record for scoring the highest amount of runs while batting second and losing, after compiling 288-9 against Pakistan in Swansea in 1983.
Sri Lanka were involved in one of only two World Cup games to end in a tie - the infamous game against South Africa in 2003 when a mix-up on Duckworth-Lewis calculations saw the hosts eliminated from the competition.
Aravinda de Silva is the third highest run scorer in World Cup history. He totalled 1,064 runs and his 35 consecutive matches for Sri Lanka is a World Cup record.
Chaminda Vaas, also in the current World Cup squad, took a record 23 wickets in the 2003 tournament in South Africa. Vaas is the fifth most successful bowler in World Cup history with 36 wickets.
Wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara’s 17 dismissals in 2003 is the second highest in a single World Cup. Australia’s Adam Gilchrist holds the record with 21 dismissals in 2003.
This Thursday, March 15, the day Bermuda meet Sri Lanka, is a memorable date for Sri Lankan cricket - they won an overseas Test for the first time in 32 attempts, beating New Zealand in 1995.
Sri Lanka were the first-ever ICC Associate nation to beat a Test country in the World Cup. They upset India in Manchester, England in 1979.
