Man injured in Court Street shooting released from hospital

A man injured in a triple shooting at a city nightclub has been released from hospital, and the other victims were said to be in a stable condition yesterday as the Police probe into the incident continued.

A 26-year-old woman and two men aged 21 and 30 were wounded when a gunman opened fire at the Swinging Doors nightclub on Court Street in the early hours of Monday. All of the victims are from Pembroke.

A hospital spokeswoman said yesterday that one of the men was discharged on Tuesday. It is understood by that this is the older man although the authorities would not confirm this amid continuing fears about revenge attacks.

Police have chosen not to follow their usual protocol of releasing the victims? names to the press on the understanding that they are used for condition checks but not published. The Bermuda Sun newspaper published three names in its Wednesday edition but Police spokesman Robin Simmons said yesterday that two of them were incorrect. ?There are two reasons why we have not released the names as usual. One is that we want to protect the integrity of the investigation. The other is for their own safety,? he explained. ?If the wrong people are named we do not know what the consequences will be.?

When asked whether the victims still in hospital are under Police guard, fellow spokesman Dwayne Caines said: ?The appropriate provisions have been made.?

Meanwhile Swinging Doors re-opened to the public on Wednesday morning for the first time since the drama although bosses at the club have remained tightlipped. A staff member indicated yesterday that a statement is being prepared, although he would not say when it would be released.

Police announced on Tuesday that a 30-year-old man had been taken into custody. He remained there yesterday, where Police said he was ?assisting with inquiries? but added that there have been no new developments in the investigation. No description of the attacker has been made public and officers have refused to be drawn on the motive.

Anyone with information about the shooting should contact the Serious Crime Unit on 299-4315 or the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline on 1-800-623-8477.
