Lawyer rapped by Bar Council
A lawyer has been found guilty of improper behaviour by his professional body after failing to pay stamp duty to the Accountant General.
Larry Scott has been banned from conveyancing for two years and must undergo further training as a result.
According to a Bar Association ruling published on Friday, Mr. Scott negligently provided for the duty to be paid at a lower rate than it should have been while handling a conveyance.
After being informed of the correct rate by the Accountant General's Department, he requested an additional $1,825 from both the vendors and purchasers of the property. He failed to send this to the Accountant General despite letters of demand sent by the Office of the Tax Commissioner.
A disciplinary tribunal found that Mr. Scott breached the Bar Professional Conduct Committee rules through his behaviour.
The episode is not the first to land him in trouble. In April, he was found guilty of scandalous conduct over a claim made in court that a 14-year-old girl made pregnant by a 27-year-old may have enjoyed "one of the most pleasurable experiences of her life". He was fined $2,500 and publically reprimanded by the Bar Association.
Mr. Scott could not be reached for comment on the latest ruling.
