Film project is added to school curriculum
The LookBermuda production company has teamed up with Government to bring their educational films to the public school curriculum.
The company's recently-launched film, 'The Riddle of the Crest', will be used to enhance public school teaching.
The film follows the research into the origins of a shield from a jug found nine miles offshore. It presents evidence that the ship depicted on Bermuda's coat of arms is not the Sea Venture as many believe.
According to a press statement from LookBermuda last night, Saltus, BHS, Warwick Academy, Bermuda College and the Bermuda Sloop have also confirmed that they will use it, and the series to follow.
Minister of Education Elvin James said: "This first film will make a wonderful resource for teachers at all levels of our school system. 'The Riddle of the Crest' has it all — it teaches history, demonstrates scientific research, provides insight into Bermuda's natural history and raises awareness of global warming.
"We look forward to continuing the process of developing a strategic partnership with LookBermuda — a partnership that will produce the best results for our students."
Teaching modules and lesson plans will be distributed alongside the films, and via an online Bermuda video streaming platform that LookBermuda is developing for that purpose.
Jean-Pierre Rouja from the company said: "LookBermuda / LookTV has been shooting in high definition since its inception with now over 1,300 hours of local HD footage captured, and we are looking to put as much of this as possible to use in enhancing both the public and private school curriculums."
The company is currently developing a series of historical and environmental films for curriculum use.
"We are producing these films to international network standards, and being a local production company, have been able to commit to following some of these stories in some cases for several years which is required to accurately tell the story," he added.
Among them are documentaries about the Sea Venture, the Sargasso Sea and the Bermuda Sloop. An environment series will focus on marine, fisheries and terrestrial conservation.
Other films will look at the Cahow relocation project to safeguard the future of the endangered birds, and a project to remove the predatory Lionfish from Bermuda's reef.
A foundation named the LookBermuda Educational Media Foundation has been launched to support the ongoing creation and distribution of its films. Mr. Rouja said the company would love to hear from anyone interested in supporting the initiatives.
