discuss the fate of one of their charges who is due to go to jail.

Dr. Clark Godwin was found guilty of four charges of intent to defraud Somers Isles Insurance in an attempt to gain more than $3,000 last year.

He had treated patients for work not covered by their insurance and then billed the company for work that was covered. He told the court he was helping patients to get the right treatment.

Dr. Godwin appealed his sentence last week and successfully had it reduced from $6,000 to $2,000.

But the appeal against the conviction was dismissed so Dr. Godwin said he would take the default sentence of three months imprisonment and go to jail on January 31 as "a matter of principle''.

When Dr. Godwin originally went to trial, the five-man Bermuda Government Dental Board, which is the controlling body overseeing dentistry in Bermuda, announced it would meet to discuss Dr. Godwin's case.

However, its members decided to wait for Dr. Godwin's appeal to go through before they met, Board chairman Dr. Kenneth Snaith said yesterday.

He added that they had not met and probably would not meet until next year at which time he would be willing to comment.

The Board has the power to suspend Dr. Godwin or take him off the register of dentists for a period of time. Either way Dr. Godwin will be unable to practice. It can also issue a verbal reprimand.
