Rangers and Cougars meet with place in top flight at stake
Ireland Rangers are set to become the newest team to clinch a place in the Premier Division tomorrow when they take on Devonshire Cougars in the match that will decide who takes the lone promotion spot.
Rangers, who have only been in the First Division two seasons, are favoured to clinch that spot after beating Prospect 6-0 in their make-up match on Thursday to go a point clear of Cougars in the standings.
That result leaves Cougars having to win on Sunday to finish in first place.
Rangers led Prospect 2-0 at the interval with goals from Stephen Burchall after 11 minutes and Michael Mendes in the 15th. Clifton Anderson (58th), Mendes (59th), Dennis DeRoza (76th) and Jermaine Saltus (89th) made certain of victory in the second half.
If Rangers do win promotion they will do it by playing one game less than the other teams, after their abandoned match with Somerset Eagles last November was never rescheduled by the BFA.
"The game against Eagles was taken away from us which I thought was a bit unfair,'' said coach Mike Corday.
"We were penalised by suspensions and then they wouldn't allowed us to play it so what they're telling us is we have to play one game less.
"I don't see the fairness in that, but I stress `these are the cards we have been dealt and that's what we have to deal with'. This is not going to stop us from attempting to win the league.'' In other matches, Somerseet Eagles meet Prospect at White Hill field, Social Club play Hamilton Parish at Bernard Park and Paget entertain St. George's at Southampton Oval.
Three of the Island's top referees will not be present for the final league matches are they are in Trinidad for the World Cup qualifier between Trinidad and the Dominican Republic. Stuart Crockwell will officiate in that match while Anthony Mouchette and Lyndon Raynor will be his assistants.
