Gooden looks ahead to tilt against Town

Great goals, darn shame about almost everything else.

All hopes of a classic end-of-season encounter yesterday between two sides with nothing to lose were blown away by the wind -- literally.

With ball control nigh impossible at times, it was left to Somerset's Kenny Thompson to warm the spectators' hearts.

He did so in the 87th minute with a thumping 40-yard drive which stretched the top right hand corner of Carlyle Crockwell's net.

But even as Crockwell made his despairing dive, much of the crowd's attention had already switched to other games on the Island.

"What's the score in the Boulevard match?'' one beer-swilling spectator asked a reporter.

And another chipped in: "What's happened to Dandy Town?'' Not long after referee Richard Knight had blown the final whistle, the crucial results began to filter through to the Somerset ground.

It was clear Boulevard's 5-1 win made other results virtually irrelevant.

Even before the news arrived, however, Somerset's coach Josef Gooden was looking ahead to next week's Friendship Trophy final with Dandy Town.

Rolling North Village over in such convincing fashion was a great way to maintain momentum.

"We wanted to get two points today from this game regardless of the Dandy Town and Boulevard results, and build up for the final next week,'' he explained.

Despite the margin of yesterday's victory, Somerset must be hoping for conditions next week more suited for playing football.

The first half was a soccer horror show, interrupted just occasionally by some great comedy.

Even the most committed soccer fan must have smiled wryly at the way the wind played tricks with the ball.

For the keepers, Crockwell and Andre Hendrickson it also provided some awkward moments.

Not that Crockwell could do much about the Trojans' opening goal in the fourth minute, when striker Rodney Bascome exquisitely screwed the ball home after a cross into Village's area by Kevin Bailey.

It augured well for the home side, but the rest of the half turned into a frustrating contest with the wind. And the wind won.

Both sides proved the folly of trying to engage in aerial combat, rather than play the ball to the feet.

After the restart, Somerset continued to have the better of exchanges and they got their rewards in the 63rd minute when Thompson opened his two-goal account with a diving header following a burrowing midfield run by Kevin Bailey.

Bascome made it three with a simple shot from close-range in the 68th minute, although Village got one back in the 76th minute through Michael Hansey.

Trojans completed the rout with an 85th minute goal by Reginald Tucker, which was followed by Thompson's cracker.
