Clarke inspired by cousin Evans' success

Darico Clarke will be gunning for medal glory at the Carifta Games in St.Lucia later this week.

It will be a family affair in the 800 metres at the Carifta Games with Darico Clarke up against his older cousin – and Bermuda's best medal bet – Aaron Evans.

Clarke fully expects to trail in Evans' wake if both relatives reach the event's final but still believes he can join his more experienced relative on the podium in St.Lucia.

The 17-year-old has been inspired to train harder by Evans' recent record-breaking exploits and will use Adidas' "Impossible is Nothing" marketing slogan for extra motivation as he bids to close the gap on his cousin.

"I know the competition is going to be tough," he said. "Trinidad have a runner called Gavin Nero and I'll also be up against my older cousin Aaron Evans.

"When Aaron broke the national indoor record that really inspired me to train harder and I'm trying to get closer to his times.

"I haven't spoken to him while he's been at college in the US, but I imagine he'll give me a few tips when I see him at Carifta."

It will be a case of third time lucky for Clarke who was unable to claim a medal at his previous two Games appearances with his best performance being a fourth place finish in his maiden Carifta.

He will be particularly hoping to redeem himself after a disappointing showing last year in St.Kitts which saw him only just scrape into Bermuda's squad and fail to build on his promising debut.

"My first appearance at Carifta saw me really focused and I was about as fit as I could be at that time," he said.

"But my second year was a bad for me.

"I was a late bloomer and had missed a few training sessions and it took me a long time to meet the qualifying standard.

"I actually only qualified two days after the team was announced and luckily I was still able to go.

"Hopefully I can make up for that this year and make the final again.

"With a little bit of luck in the Caribbean I could win medal and if I put my head together I think I can do it.

"It would be a dream for me to win a medal at the Carifta Games and as the Adidas slogan says, "Impossible is Nothing".

Bermuda claimed one medal at last year's Games with 19-year-old Evans winning the bronze in the 800 metres.

The Carifta Games will take place in St Lucia from April 11-13, at the George Odlum Stadium in Vieux Fort.
