Brown pushes for speed cameras to be installed

The Deputy Premier is pushing for speed cameras to be quickly installed on the Island's roads following the recent deaths of two young men on motorbikes.

Dr. Ewart Brown told The Royal Gazette he had asked his Cabinet colleague Randy Horton, Minister for Public Safety, "to expedite the installation of the speed cameras".

Mr. Horton said in April that there was still much work to be done before the cameras could be introduced and that he could make no promises on the timeframe.

Dr. Brown last night expressed his regret at the deaths of 26-year-old Travis Smith and 17-year-old Derick Paynter. The latter was killed in a road accident in St. George's on June 29.

Mr. Smith is believed to have been returning home from the funeral service for the teenager when his motorbike collided with a car on the border of Smith's and Devonshire last Thursday. He became the Island's sixth road fatality of the year.

"We continue to be saddened by these unnecessary road deaths, but one can appreciate the depth of the challenge when a young man is tragically killed riding away from his friend's funeral," said Dr. Brown. "I can only urge riders and parents to attach more value to their lives. I urge the Police to continue their vigilance on the roads."
