Foggo on fire with two tons
Police 208-5 Stand-in captain Richie Foggo lashed his second century in as many days at Southampton Oval but was unable to prevent Warwick from going down to defeat against Police.
Foggo followed up his maiden ton on Saturday, when he bludgeoned a feeble Somerset Bridge attack for 179 not out in their drawn encounter, with 112 against a more venomous Police offering.
After blasting 25 fours and eight sixes against Bridge, Foggo continued his onslaught, totalling 16 boundaries yesterday -- 12 fours and four sixes -- before finally falling, caught and bowled by Police paceman Freston Hurdle.
In all the number four batsman spent over five hours at the crease.
However, the extended stay was not without pitfalls as a battered Foggo was restricted to the sidelines late during Sunday's contest.
"I was lucky,'' responded Foggo when asked of his good early form. "All I can say is that I'm seeing the ball early and from there just go with the flow...if the ball's there I will go for it.
Foggo, a former Cup match performer for St. George's and enjoying his second season at Warwick, explained that he had experienced vision problems before, but with those rectified, he is now able to focus more clearly.
"Warwick used to be pushovers where every team would come in and have us bat first so that they could get an early day. Now they have to think twice and will have to do so from now on,'' said Foggo.
Yesterday saw Foggo enter with Warwick in trouble at 12-for-2 before he and Daniel Caines (34) put on 94 for the third wicket.
After Caines' dismissal, wickets fell regularly as Police's pace duo of Roger Blades and Freston Hurdle mowed through the middle and late order.
Blades finished with four-for-41 from 16.1 overs and Hurdle four-for-66 from 18 overs.
Police got off to a solid start as Donovan Livingston (15) and first week centurion Wayne Clarke (49) put up 59 for the first wicket.
However, the loss of the openers and further casualties in the form of Stevie Lightbourne (30), Dennis Archer (two) and Terry Thomas (four) placed the visitors in difficulty at 132-for-five.
And as Warwick gained in confidence it was left to Blades to burst the proverbial `bubble' through a belligerent display of power hitting while partnered by Andrew Rollins (eight not out), smashing 83 runs in less than an hour, including seven fours and eight sixes.
Young Quinton Sherlock claimed three-for-31 from seven overs of medium-pace, with Allan Wilkinson two-for-47 taking the remaining scalps.
Western Stars 232-7 Southampton 84 Western Stars bounced back from their stunning loss to St. George's a week ago as they pulverised Southampton in a one-sided contest at St. John's Field.
Put in to bat on a questionable strip, Stars responded by totalling 232-for-seven as new signee Albert Steede proved his worth, just missing out on a century in scoring 93.
Cleon Scotland assisted with a half century (56) batting at number six, while other useful contributions came from Ricky Brangman (28) and skipper Arnold Manders (22).
Quinton Burch was the only Southampton bowler of note as he claimed four-for-28.
Of the visitors only Kwame Tucker (48) appeared to have packed his bat as Southampton were placed on the rack early and never recovered.
Allan Brangman led the Stars bowlers with four-for-12, while Wayne Richardson took three-for-19. Manders two-for-36 and Gary Brangman one-for-6.
Somerset Bridge 117 Somerset 120-3 Somerset claimed their first points of the season with an easy seven wicket victory over neighbours Somerset Bridge.
A reasonable start by Bridge openers Carlton Simons (25) and Leroy Brangman (34) was wasted as the middle order collapsed under the spin of veteran James Swan who claimed four-for-24 from 10 overs.
Only captain David Jones (26) at number six offered resistance as Swan and Co.
did the damage.
Assisting Swan were brothers Charles and Stephen Brown, both with two wickets, and Brian Morris with one.
Chasing a small target Somerset were led by Tony Cheeseman's 44, while Shannon Warner contributed 39 and Brian Morris 23 not out.
NOT OUT! -- Southampton's Dawuud Tucker eyes up an apparent catch, but Albert Steede of Western Stars was ruled not out on this occasion.
