Easy win gives MR Onions title

MR Onions bounced back from suffering their first league defeat of the season to seal the Commercial A league title on Saturday with a resounding win 6-1 over a skilful North Village side.

Despite controlling the play for the majority of the first half, Onions only had one goal to show for their efforts ¿ a composed finish from Colin Keane after beating the offside trap to latch onto a Chris Fleming through ball.

The tide turned further in the Onions' favour when North Village emerged for the second half with only ten men.

The Onions turned the screw and the crucial second goal was added from range by Jameel Effendy. The hosts were the able to relax as top scorer Keane went on to complete his fifth hat-trick of the season and substitute Matt Savage added two late strikes.

North Village notched a late consolation ¿ only the second goal the Onions conceded at home in the league all season as the team clinched their second league title, following their 2005 championship.

Dandy Town Roots scored an 89th minute winner against Robin Hood on Saturday to clinch second-place. Paul Cann scored the only goal of the match after combining well with Darron Simons. Hood matched the home side through out the contest but lost their keeper with 10 minutes remaining. Cann and Simons were causing Hood all sorts of problems in the first half, however, Roots could not find their killer touch in front of goal. But just as the game was destined for a goalless draw, Cann was on hand to drive home the winner.

Hood were in action again on Tuesday night, beating Somerset Extros 4-1, under the Somerset floodlights. Steven Simons scored two headers, either side of half time, bracketing a Derek Stapely strike just before the break which restored Hood's advantage after Everett Wellman had equalized for Extros. Brian Fubler completed the scoring for the Hood.

BAA's poor finish to the season continued when they were beaten 3-1 by an understrength Key West on Saturday. The game started poorly with neither team pushing for a win. However Key West began to put BAA under pressure and only a brilliant save from skipper Paul Nicholson from a Key West penalty kept the teams level.

Key West did open the scoring shortly after with a brilliant volley from Tito Smith. This seemed to finally get BAA going and they leveled the scores with a Noel McGrath penalty after Paul Colvin had been taken down in the box.

The second-half saw little improvement in the play and the game seemed to be heading for a draw when with 15 minutes remaining Key West got a penalty from nowhere which Karl Roberts coolly converted. Key West wrapped it up when with five minutes remaining Ricky Mallory scored a tremendous half volley from 25 yards to leave the score 3-1 to the visitors.

A second-half brace from Joey Azman and one from Chuck Woods handed Lobster Pot a much-needed victory over Valley who are now in the drop zone and will need a win against North Village Rams on Saturday to stay up.

Pot face Tuff Dogs on Saturday who moved out of the bottom two with a 7-2 hammering of doomed Somerset Extros. Jamal Lovell opened the scoring. Robert Marques scored a penaly following a handball.

Darrin Xuereb then scored a brace followed by a late hat-trick by Lovintz Tota.

In a tense local derby, St.George's All-Stars clinched the top spot in the Commercial B Group One and the right to play for the Division B title this Saturday against Group Two winners Prospect/Fire.

All-Stars made hard work of defeating a spirited, albeit much younger St. David's outfit. Just when it looked not to be their day, All-Stars Franklyn Greaves was on hand inside the box to scramble the ball over the line for the winner.

PHC, who had led Group One for most of the season, finished the season with the 5-1 walloping of Boulevard. Sheridan Ming got two, while Keith Bell, Derek Lowe and Tyrell Simons were all on target while Mark Woods got a consolation for Boulevard.

Vasco beat Somerset Bridge Recreation Club 4-1, with two goals each from Joe Barrosso and Ricardo Arruda in a game lacking an official referee.

In B Division Group 2 leaders Prospect/Fire were forced to fight hard for a 2-1 victory against an under-strength MR Onions Real Men team.

Prospect/Fire full-back Bo Saggar hammered in from range but Real Men quicly equalised through a neat lob from Andy Robinson who was then forced to go in goal through injury.

And he was unable to keep out a late Justin Robinson winner as the home side's constant possession finally paid off.

Devonshire Lions pick up a 3-0 default win after local rivals Devonshire All-Stars could not muster a side.

Dockyard Falcons edged out Pest Control 4-3. Both teams started with ten men and went for the victory from the off. Falcons opened the scoring after 15 minutes through Dwayne DeRosa, only for Pest Control to even the scores through a Jamie Matthews strike.

The in-form striker pounced again to send Pest Control in 2-1 at the half.

Falcons 11th man made the difference as they came out blazing after the interval and eventually broke the home sides resistance on the hour with a fine passage of play capped with an unstoppable strike into the top left corner. The West Enders went further in front from the spot after a tired backline finally succumbed to the numerous raids on the Pest Control goal.

The home side provided the perfect response as they earned a penalty of their own from the restart. Henry Young stepped up and buried the spot kick to again level the proceedings. The game went end to end for a period before Falcons snatched what proved to be the winner from close range in the dying seconds.
