Repeat traffic offender jailed
A 20-year-old man who had more than $5,000 in fines for driving offences has been jailed for six months.
William Lightbourne, of Alexander Road, Devonshire, was charged with failing to have a licensed bike, third party insurance and a driver's licence as well as driving while disqualified and speeding at 71 kph on November 17 last year.
Lightbourne pleaded guilty to all four charges on Friday and Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $100 for driving without a driver's licence, $250 for the unlicensed bike, $1,000 for not having third party insurance, $600 for speeding and $1,000 for driving while disqualified.
However, Lightbourne also had $3,250 in outstanding fines for prior convictions and a suspended sentence of three months for a previous conviction of driving while disqualified.
Mr. Warner activated the three months suspended sentence and also gave Lightbourne six months in jail for driving while disqualified and the fines incurred for the offences on November 17, 2006, to run concurrent.
Mr. Warner added: "I hope you get the message for not paying your fines."
