Man jailed for assaults

A man who stole three bottles of liquor, assaulted a female Police officer and two men who aided her was yesterday sent to prison for two years.

Dhakari Hollis, 30 of Radnor Close, Hamilton Parish pleaded guilty on Friday to five counts related to burglary and assault in Magistrates? Court. The counts were stealing, assaulting a Police officer and doing bodily harm, resisting arrest, assaulting and causing bodily harm to Darren Longbottom and assaulting and causing bodily harm to Clifford Ford.

The court heard that at 5 p.m. on December 21, Hollis walked into A1 Smiths? to the liquor section. P.c. Okereke, whose first name was not given, noticed Hollis and began to observe him. He removed a bottle of Absolut vodka and two bottles of Bacardi vodka and left the store. P.c. Okereke followed the defendant to a motorbike where she told him that he would be arrested under suspicion of stealing.

He argued with the officer and kicked her in the chest, causing her to stumble. When she tried to arrest him, Hollis struck her on her arm.

The assistant manager of the store, Darren Longbottom came out to aid P.c. Okereke when Hollis assaulted him as well, by grabbing his testicles causing him excruciating pain. Another man, Clifford Ford, came to aid in the arrest and was assaulted by Hollis also. Before being arrested, the defendant bit the officer?s left hand.

Asked by Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo if he had anything to say, Hollis replied: ?Sorry to the citizens of Bermuda ? whoever watched it cause? you know how pokey people are?.

Hollis received three months imprisonment for stealing, two years for assaulting a Police officer, six months for resisting arrest, two years for assaulting Mr. Longbottom and two years for assaulting Mr. Ford. The sentences will run concurrently.
