Youth Council seeks more input on tackling issues
The Bermuda Youth Council has appealed for feedback on how to tackle the issues affecting the Island.
The council comprises of eleven representatives from the Berkeley Institute, CedarBridge Academy, Bermuda Institute, Bermuda High School, Saltus Grammar School and Whitney Institute. It is chaired by Dr. Stanley James.
Highlighting the work of the council yesterday, its media correspondent, Eron Hill, 14, from the Bermuda Institute, explained: "We discuss the varying issues that the youth face every day. We meet twice a month in the Senate chamber. Our motivation is to be a voice for young people in Bermuda to discuss the problems such as childhood obesity, gang violence and high school passing levels.
"It is our fundamental belief that we must talk about about the injustices that Bermuda faces and how we as beneficiaries of tomorrow can help repair such injustices, recognising that the world is not flat and the issues are not biased to one country."
He added: "We invite anyone interested in a better tomorrow, starting with today, to partake in our discussions on our group page on Facebook, and e-mail any concerns and any comments our way."
One of the issues the National Youth Council is focusing on is tackling obesity in schools. They're working in tandem with a Department of Health initiative to help students improve their eating and exercise habits.
As part of that project, schools plan to send students to supermarkets next week to share their knowledge about healthy eating with members of the public giving them ratings on what's in their basket.
