Three men fined for cannabis possession

Three men in Magistrates’ Court on unrelated cannabis charges were fined on Friday in quick succession.Jason Lee, of Devonshire, was caught with the drug on Parsons Road during an October 22 stop-and-search by uniformed police.Crown counsel Robert Welling told Magistrates Court the 18-year-old was stopped at 8.20pm.A bag containing three plastic twists of plant-like material was found in his pocket. It was found to be 2.9 grams of cannabis. Lee was within 300 yards of Victor Scott Primary when he was stopped.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $1,000 for drug possession, with an extra $1,500 because of his proximity to the school, an increased penalty zone.Lee was also fined $100 and given seven demerit points for driving with no licence.Stefan Durrant, of Sandys, was fined $1,000 for possessing 0.5 grams of the drug.The 23-year-old was taken to Hamilton Police Station on 24 October at 3.20am on another matter.During a search, a clear plastic twist containing plant-like matter was found in his left sock.Durrant told Mr Warner: “I apologise to the court, and to the police officers for giving them a hard time.”Jason Simmons, 26, of Sandys, was next charged with possession of cannabis found in a police weapons search on September 24.Mr Welling said police signalled to the driver of a motorcycle to pull over on Parsons Road at 8.40pm.Simmons was seen “looking frantically in their direction” and appeared agitated.Police noticed a smell of burnt cannabis, and stopped Simmons when he placed a hand into his pocket.Inside a cigarette box, they found a hand-rolled cigarette containing plant-like material.Asked about it, Simmons said: “I know what it is. It’s marijuana.” It was later found to be 0.3 grams of the drug.Mr Warner fined him $1,000.All fines were to be paid by March 4.
