US pair grab one-stroke lead at Mid Ocean
a one-stroke lead in the net division after yesterday's first round of the Mid Ocean Club's 11th Women's Invitation Tournament.
Hot on their trails, however, are a team with Island connections.
Jean Mylrea, of Bermuda, and Ginette Spinucci, a one-time local resident who now resides in Georgia, follow on 66. In third place on 68 is the team of Carol Davenport of Surrey, England, and Corene Turner of Virginia.
Mylrea and Spinucci showed how familiarity with the course can help when they grabbed daily honours in the gross division by finishing on 75. Bermuda's Madeline Joell-Warren and Janina Jacobs of Missouri followed a stroke behind on 76 while further behind on 78 were Judy Kitson of Bermuda and Maisie Barlow of Pennsylvania. After that it was Legere and Welch.
Second round play will take place today.
The third round of the Glidden Bowl will be played today at Belmont with the current leaders in the gross division expecting to breeze to victory.
Aaron James leads the boys' Under-12 age group gross division with a 156 while Anthony Smith trails far behind on 175.
Justin Barritt holds down the lead in the 13-14 division on 159 while B.J.
Payne follows on 168.
Robert Spurling shot a 146 to head the Over-15 division while Mike Sims follows on 151 and David James on 152.
In the net division James leads the Under-12's with 128, Barritt in the 13-14 on 137 and Spurling the Over-15's on 138.
The girls open division sees Lindsey Sims lead the gross division with a 177 and the net with 181. Jennifer Spurling trails with a 190 and 144.
