Hard work pays off for forties

Goals in each half by Roy Fellowes and Richard Bradbury helped Forties to a decisive victory over Prison Officers at BAA field.

The game was never as close as the scoreline with Prison Officers clearly lacking in attack and consequently seldom able to pin down the defence for any significant periods.

The veteran Fellowes gave his team a deserved 1-0 lead at the half when he hammered a shot home from 16 yards after 41 minutes.

Spearheaded on by some hard work in midfield by Fellowes and Andy Robinson, Robin Hood continued to dominate in the second half, but time and time again some good approach work broke down because of solid defending by centre-halves Gary Smith and Vince Minors.

Prison Officers were forced to battle on with only 10 players when forward Clarence Dill was sent off for rough play after 65 minutes, but by then it was apparent that they did not have the ability to fight back from behind anyway.

The inevitable second goal came after 75 minutes when Franco Caparra created the opening for Bradbury to slam the ball home past goalkeeper Cal DeShields from just inside the penalty box.

Paget 3, Park United 0 A stunning solo goal by Ivan Trott put the fizz into a champagne display by Paget yesterday at Southampton Oval.

And it left Park United feeling the hangover of a comprehensive FA Cup pasting.

Trott picked up the ball from just beyond Park's half-way line and set off on a dazzling 30-yard run.

Several Park defenders were left for dead as Trott powered himself into his opponents' area, and unleashed a ferocious shot. The ball soared high into the back of the net, leaving Park's goalie George Braithwaite no chance.

The 40th-minute strike was the launch-pad for a second half goal burst by Paget.

First, striker Antoine Simmons was sent sprawling in the box in the 51st-minute. Referee Richard Knight had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Simmons took the kick himself, coolly arrowing the ball into the top left hand corner.

Five minutes later Perry Saunders put the seal on Park's day of misery.

All-action midfielder Ewar Hunt floated the ball into Park's area from a free kick by the right-hand corner flag.

Saunders, creeping up unmarked from the back, headed the ball past a hapless Braithwaite. The 3-0 scoreline was no more than Paget deserved against opponents completely outclassed.

Paget could have had a fourth in the 75th minute when Onslow Lightbourne thought he had scored. But Knight ruled the goal offside.

The nearest Park came to scoring was in the 33rd minute when Henry Young put Anthony Francis clear with a long pass. Francis slipped the ball to midfielder Elvis Edness who struck it weakly into goalkeeper Neville Ball's arms.
