First half goals kill off Cougars
Two goals in the first half by Romond Douglas and Jerry Laws were sufficient to brush off Devonshire Cougars' challenge in this FA Cup quarter-final match at White Hill Field yesterday.
In an undistinguished game in which play was no better than ordinary in the first half and even less inspiring after the break, Colts kept control and thoroughly deserved the victory against a troubled Cougars outfit who are trying to regain some form in their bid to escape relegation.
Colts struck after 21 minutes when Marvin Belboda raced down the left flank and crossed for Douglas to fire home. And the second goal came after 32 minutes when Belboda again crossed from the left for Laws to score from close range.
Belboda made amends by creating the two goals after blowing a chance of his own early on when he was surprisingly robbed off possession just as he was about to shoot from a few yards out.
Cougars, forced to field some new faces because of suspensions and injuries, had just two chances to score in the 30th minute. First Cory Goddard's shot from close range was saved by goalkeeper Troy Hall and the rebound went to veteran forward Phillip Clarke who drilled the ball over from just 12 yards.
Belboda also had a clear chance at goal after smartly beating three defenders, but powered his shot wide from 15 yards.
The same attacking and counter attacking trend didn't reoccur after the break as Colts began to look disjointed up front while Cougars simply didn't have the firepower to create scoring chances.
