Bowlers strike out for big time
will not be lacking experience when they take on some of the world's best in Malaysia later this month.
And Antoine Jones, Conrad Lister, Dianne (Bobby) Ingham and veteran June Pitt are not expected to be suffer the jitters when they represent the Island in an event that they feel has finally got the recognition it has deserved. Thanks to international bowling events like the FIQ, the World Championships and the American Zone Championships and others, the foursome over the years have picked up a wealth of experience -- and now they are all looking forward to what lies ahead. Ingham, for one doesn't hide her excitement.
"I was elated to have been chosen as one of two women for the Commonwealth Games. I am satisfied that I will be competing at a time when my game is probably at its highest level, and I am really looking forward to it,'' she said. Her enthusiasm and high level of confidence is based on her recent performances during the roll-off for an international tournament in the United Arab Emirates that saw her finish second among the women with an average of 191. That qualifying process saw Ingham compete against 10 of the best bowlers in Bermuda. Like many of her teammates she has no fears of travelling to Malaysia, having been there to attend the FIQ tournament in 1991. "This is definitely the biggest tournament that I will have participated in to date, but I am really up for it,'' she added. Jones, one of the two male team members, was similarly upbeat. A regular Bermuda representative at international tournaments on both sides of the Atlantic and in the Caribbean, Jones has also been encouraged by his recent roll-off average of 205 for the trip to the Arab Emirates in November. "My present form appears to be pretty good, at least by the average I had during that roll-off. I really think I am close to my peak,'' said Jones, who has been bowling for 23 years. "I have been to many tournaments, but although this is the first Commonwealth I don't view it as being any bigger than the others. I am not threatened by it at all; I am confident that I will go and not be nervous or anything like that.'' BOWLING BOW
