The gas had leaked into the crawl space, where mechanics work underneath vehicles. Nine fire service personnel used smoke extractors to ventilate the area.

Four fire appliances and 12 personnel were called to the Elbow Beach Hotel where smoke, from controlled burning at the Coral Beach Club, had set off an alarm.
