Grieving mum angry after Police break through door
A mother still grieving the loss of her three-year-old son was disgusted to come home yesterday and find Police had knocked through her front door while searching for fugitive Alvone Maybury.
Maybury later told The Royal Gazette he felt sorry for dragging the family into the situation.
The 24-year-old, who has been charged with three gun related offences, has been on the run since Tuesday when he escaped from two prison guards in Hamilton.
Lisa Swan, who lives on Princess Street in Hamilton, is the grandmother of Maybury's son. Her daughter and Alvone used to date but Mrs. Swan has not seen him in years. The family is still recovering from the drowning death of Mrs. Swan's son Stanwondae 'Miracle' Swan on June 27.
At 4.15 p.m. yesterday Police raided her home in search of Maybury, a tense situation ensued with family members yelling at Police. The family was at work at the time but arrived shortly after. Many said they had already told Police everything they knew and Police could have asked to go to the house and they would have opened the doors for them.
"I am not a criminal," Mrs. Swan said yesterday. "I am grieving the loss of my son.
"I do know Alvone as he used to see my daughter.
"He lived with us for a while but I did not like his lifestyle so I put him out. I do not see him, my daughter does because they have a child together.
"Do they think I would keep a criminal in my house? A criminal who is wanted on gun charges, when I am trying to live a good life?"
She said she spent yesterday helping tourists at a beach concession and came home to find Police had forced their way into her home looking for Maybury shortly before, breaking the door and the frame.
A man, visibly upset, yelled at officers: "We are grieving can't you see this, leave us alone!"
Mrs. Swan said: "They wonder why they don't get respect from the community. They show no respect, we would have come and opened the door for them. We are not criminals. There are drug dealers all around here and they aren't busting them, they aren't solving murders, they are busting in my door."
In a Facebook message last night Maybury told The Royal Gazette: "That was wrong what they [Police] did n I wouldn't wanna put Lisa in my stuff but Police do what they want, they don't have heart then they want people help them with things going on."
