Reds run riot over arch rivals

Teachers demolished a weak Renegades outfit by nine tries to one to record the highest points margin victory over their arch rivals in First XV action on the weekend.

Five tries came from the Reds in the second half without reply and it was obvious from the kick-off that Gades sorely missed their experienced props and locks.

Teachers took full advantage of their scrummaging superiority by driving their opponents back at will and disrupting Andy Trinder's feed from the base of the scrum.

Both Teachers' props, Brian Desmond and Devrae Noel-Simmons, relished the opportunity to take the ball on at rucks and mauls. Bobby Hurdle took the ball on from the base of the scrum and Mark Docherty did a lot of cleaning up for his backs and kept the ball alive.

Renegades defended stoutly for 15 minutes before Andrew Correia crossed first with three defenders on his back after a superb pick-up after Heath Robinson had been tackled.

Noel-Simmons went over unchallenged from 20 metres out and Robinson sprinted to the corner for his try after Nathan Brown had made a midfield break.

With the score at 21-0 after 25 minutes, Gades surprisingly picked their game up and pressured Teachers for 10 minutes with a patch of brilliance that almost resulted in a try from Greg Garside. But Correia stopped him in his tracks by first ankle tapping and then bringing him down inches short of the try line.

It was Correia who finished off the scoring at the half with his second try after Jeff Sangster had drawn two defenders before sending Correia over for an easy score.

Following the half-time score of 28-7, the Reds dominated all phases of play.

In particular, tries from Craig McIntyre and Robinson saw the ball pass through most of the team. Kevin Harris and Anthony Cupidore also scored but the best try came from Alvin Harvey after substitute James Dockery had taken the ball in his own 22 metre area and beat two men along the touchline over the next 50 metres before sending Harvey over under the posts. Harris converted all tries for a personal tally of 23 points.

Police 15 Mariners 40 In an entertaining match, Police lacked finishing power after having created their chances in the first half.

Dana George had a good day by bagging two tries for Police while Mariners' number eight, Steve Robb took his team's honours with two well-taken tries.

Prop John Williams enjoyed his best game for Police and was everywhere in the loose. Devrae Noel-Simmons played as a guest for Mariners and made a try for Nick Seddon on the wing and also scored one himself.

Gavin Corcoran, playing in the unfamiliar role of lock, and Jeff Madeiros, scored the other tries for Mariners.
