If you are looking for a place to enjoy a healthy snack that won't upset your dietitian, the new tea room at the Bermuda Perfumery might not be your best bet.But if you're looking for a yummy afternoon high tea full of sinfully delicious ingredients like sugar, butter, flour, rum syrup, honey and dates, Sweet P might be the place.Paula Hayward and Nicki O'Connell opened the tea service in the grounds ofStewart Hall on Queen Street in February. And customers can also browse in the Perfumery while they are there as the St George's landmark business looks to attract more visitors and locals alike.“St George is a great place to be located,” said Ms Hayward. “If you have the day to spend in St George to walk around, it is nice to finish with tea at Sweet P. We both live in St George. I just moved back to Bermuda a year ago after being away for 30-plus years. For the last few years I have been thinking about opening a place in St George. In the United States I owned a restaurant with my ex-husband in Rutherford, New Jersey, so I have been in the business for several decades.”Ms O'Connell studied catering in England but was a teacher for many years before being made redundant. She met Ms Hayward, her business partner, through mutual friends.“We were given the opportunity to start the tea service and it evolved from that,” said Ms O'Connell. “It was really nice to have Paula's expertise in pastry, as an addition to the tea service.”Sweet P can also cater events such as birthday parties and bridal showers. They also cater events off-site.“We did a really nice surprise birthday tea over the weekend and Paula did a fabulous cake for the lady,” said Ms O'Connell. “They were just thrilled.”Traditional tea at Sweet P comes with a twist in that it includes little quiches, scones with apricots or dates and rum babas, brioche pastry soaked in rum syrup. There are also various confections topped with grand marnier butter cream swirls or raspberry lemon glazes. The offerings vary from week to week.“I do have to stop myself sampling,” Ms Hayward admitted. “Being in the restaurant business for the past 15 years, my desserts were very different everything was individually plated and designed. The tea things are different so I absolutely do a lot of tasting. I have definitely gained weight this past year.”The restaurant has clients of all ages.“A lot of people are looking for a birthday party venue for children,” said Ms Hayward. “It is a nice venue for them. I worked at the Ritz Hotel in Boston for a couple of years when I was first starting out. We used to do teddy bear teas, mostly for girls, and they would get all dressed up. It is kind of an etiquette experience for them as well as fun. It is a nice thing.“We have a little courtyard where you can have an intimate setting. Stewart Hall is a Bermuda National Trust property. We try, weather permitting, to be outside with the tea for the most part, because it is really pretty out in the garden. If we have to, if it is raining, then we are able to set up inside.”Tea is served on an eclectic mix of delicate tea cups and saucers.“Everything is mix and match,” said Ms Hayward. They have a direct link with cruise ships so it is important to call ahead to arrange a spot for tea.“Everyone is starting to talk about us,” said Ms Hayward. “So we have some spots booked months in advance. For tourists it is such a nice thing to do, given our British history.”The cost is $24 per person. Sweet P is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2pm to 5pm.For more information telephone 747-2060 or e-mail sweetpbermuda@hotmail.com
