Bermuda suffer close loss

FC Porto of Portugal started off the International Youth Tournament with a victory over host country Bermuda at the National Stadium.

But they had to rely on a late winner to prevent Bermuda from snatching a point after a superb second half fightback.

Porto were deserving of the 1-0 lead they held at the half, courtesy of a 28th minute goal from striker Helder Postiga.

The result was a goal from substitute Jabari Furbert in the 63rd minute as Porto started to fade.

However, they picked it up again for a late burst which produced the winner 14 minutes from the end of an exciting match that was full of incidents.

They were not long in coming, either, as just 90 seconds into the match Silvo Nunes put a shot against the crossbar. Porto were quick to settle and their front trio of Nunes, Postiga and Simao Campos caused some early problems for the Bermuda defence as Postiga put a shot over the top in the sixth minute.

Porto were also showing a physical side to their game which was matched by the local players who refused to be intimidated.

Defender Nuno Santos was booked for fouling, just minutes after fullback Tiago Silva escaped even a lecture from referee Anthony Mouchette after pulling Marlon Dill's shirt.

Dill was eventually booked himself for fouling Silva later in the half. Porto took the lead in the 28th minute when a pass behind the Bermuda defence caught the back four watching and waiting for offside. As they did Postiga pounced on the loose ball and steered a first time header past the advancing Zane Hendrickson.

A breakaway effort a minute later set up Postiga but this time with Hendrickson sprinting off his line the striker failed to connect with the ball and missed a good opportunity to double the lead for his team.

The narrow deficit gave Bermuda some hope for the second half and two substitutions at the start of the half provided an extra boost as Omar Ray came on for Justin Lambert and Georon Trott replaced Shannon Raynor. Tariq Jennings replaced Marlon Dill late in the first half as he went off with a finger injury.

Now it was Bermuda's chance to enjoy a period of dominance as striker Mackie Crane glanced a header wide from a freekick.

Bermuda was back on the attack again with substitute Furbert, from his first touch, forcing the Porto goalkeeper Nuno Lopes into action with a save at the near post.

Lopes was already having more work to do than he did in the first half but he could do nothing to prevent Bermuda from equalising minutes later when substitutes Ray and Furbert combined to make it 1-1. Ray provided the low cross from the right and Furbert sidefooted past the goalkeeper from close range.

Porto produced their winner from a late surge when Pedro Rocha broke free of the Bermuda defence and drove a shot into the roof of the net from 20 yards.
