Earth tones are `the look' in make-up

Earth tones are still hot in make-up colours for this fall and winter season featuring your fair share of browns, oranges and currants.

Another one of the "in'' things is having hot, sensuously shiny lips, which means glossy is back. Red luscious lip colour is also making a comeback -- this could add that special touch to the resurrection of stilettos which is also behind the inspiration of the "stiletto-shaped nails'' fashion.

Trimingham Brothers cosmetic buyer Lynn Matthews said there are more earth tones like dark browns and reds in season.

"Last year there was the vamp look, which Britons called black magic -- which is the dark colour look. This year we have more earth tones but in dark naturals,'' Mrs. Matthews said.

She added: "There are a lot of browns and taupes in lipsticks and nail varnishes along with golds.

"Colours, complexion wise, really have not changed from the neutral look that was out last year.'' Mrs. Matthews said the store is also bringing in hair mascara -- "which is big in Hollywood''.

"You can colour your hair with streaks and it washes out,'' she said. "The really way out colour is a cobalt blue and we are also getting amber, champagne, paprika, chestnut, and opaline, which is an opal colour.'' She added that there have already been "loads'' of requests for the hair mascara. "It's in all the magazines and it was launched this summer in the US, according to reports it was phenomenal.'' A Body Shop Colourings consultant agreed that make-up colours for this season were mostly natural.

"There are more oranges and dark browns in, but I believe what colours you wear depends on the person and how they want to look,'' the consultant said.

"I don't believe that rule of labelling a person to be warm or cool when choosing what makeup colours to wear. It depends on how a person feels that day instead of what is in fashion.'' She added that depending on how a woman feels "she can pull off whatever colour she chooses to coordinate with her clothing or her personality.

"The colours that are trendy right now are the warm oranges and dark browns in the eye shadow as well as light and dark shimmery blue which is in for this year.

"In eyeliner we have dark brown, or for a more dramatic look we have white eye designer which seems to be a hit with the teenagers.'' The consultant also said the Body Shop just got three new shimmer lipsticks in -- violet shimmer, gold shimmer, and platinum shimmer, and also for lips there are lots of chocolate and coffee shades.

"There are more natural blushes such as bronze which is an earthy tone as well as russet which is a brick red brown colour. Sweet nutmeg is also a popular blush.'' She added that Colourings blackcurrant lipstick in a wine colour is very popular as well as dark espresso which is a brown with a purplish undertone, and licorice stick which can be used as a lip liner or a lipstick.

"This particular colour is also very popular with every age group. The other lipstick which is called complete colour driftwood 06 can be used on the eyes, cheeks, and lips, that is also a dark brown.

"In foundation, as the weather gets dryer you want a more moisturising foundation and we have skin treat foundation in four different shades. It has altha-hydroxy acids and light diffusers which bring radiance to the skin along with a touch of essential oils for moisturiser.'' The consultant also said the Body Shop has an oil control foundation for oily skin. This comes in four shades as well.

Strands beauty therapist Lisa Truscott said red lipstick should be worn with neutral eyes and there are a lot of golds and browns in nail varnishes and lipsticks.

"There is a lot of black eyeliner that is smudged so it is not harsh and nails are suppose to be long and pointed to match stiletto heels.

"Square nails, like square shoes, are over,'' she said.

"For make-up cheeks should match the lipsticks. You should always concentrate on one area so if your using a lot of dark on your eyes then you should go for a neutral lip,'' Miss Truscott said.

She added: "Last year the colours were very cream, now the colours are very frosted in lipstick and nail varnishes.'' At H.A.&E. Smith, the colours being sold in Elizabeth Arden are browns, teak (a greeny brown earthy colour), slate mushroom, and buff.

"Lipsticks are basically brown earth tones and reds will never go. In blushes the colours are neutral, sugar plum, terracotta, tawny, and petal which are all pinky-browns,'' a consultant said.

"Eye liners are the typical brown, black, grey, blue, and green and there is also a fawn colour.

"We also have powder eye liner in mulberry, espresso, smoky black, gun metal and midnight,'' she added.

NAIL COLOURS FOR FALL -- Dark browns, reds and currants are some of the nail polish colours in style for this fall and winter season.

BROWNIE POINTS -- Pitch the baby pink. New deep chocolate brown nail enamels are the hip new hues to wear with fall's longer, stiletto-shape nails.

SLEEKED CHEEKS -- Like powder suits and killer heels, 80's-inspired contoured cheeks are making a big comeback. To make the look modern, swipe blush at an angle from below apples of cheeks up towards temples, then blend.

COLOUR DARE -- The sexiest way to wear colour this fall is anywhere you want it. Check out new multi-purpose powders to sweep on lids, cheeks or cleavage.

LUSTROUS LIPS -- The hip new look for fall is a sensuously shiny, voluptuous mouth. One national make-up artist suggests dipping your lipstick in a pot gloss before applying to achieve this sexy, glossy effect easily.

LOOK-ALIKE LIPS AND CHEEKS -- Pick matching blush and lipstick hues to master the new monochromatic makeup look.
