hb330 New hoops tourney takes off
three-on-three basketball tournament a low-profile event.
So much for that idea.
In less than a week of word-of-mouth advertising, 15 teams have already signed up for tomorrow's M&K three-on-three tournament, believed to be the first of its type to be held in Bermuda.
"And we're expecting more,'' said Atwell, who, along with friend Mark Daniels, came up with the idea as a means of raising funds for his Sandys Community Centre.
Atwell first thought of the tournament being for youngsters but most teams, which have paid $25 to enter, consist of players over 18, he said.
"I just mentioned it to a few friends and it took off like wildfire,'' said Atwell.
Huge in North America, three-on-three basketball involves three-person teams -- with one substitute -- playing half-court games under normal basketball rules.
"If all goes well, I hope to expand it,'' said Atwell, a recent graduate in recreational leadership at Humber College in Toronto.
Atwell hasn't set a financial goal, only to raise enough to help in the purchase of sports equipment for youths, an adjustable basketball hoop being high on the list. Admission is one dollar and food stalls, fun castle and bake sales will also be part of what he calls a "family event.'' "It's amazing the number of people who live in Somerset who never heard about the community centre,'' he said.
Sandys Community Centre is on Boaz Island, next to Messina House.
