Kirkland first at Cork Regatta
Teenage sailing sensation Jesse Kirkland overcame illness to claim victory in the Laser Radial Gold Fleet at the Cork Regatta, one of the top events in North America.
Kirkland was one of eight Bermudians competing in the Cork event in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and six top six finishes in seven races was enough to give him victory.
The youngster combined excellent starts, outstanding speed and good shift reading in the difficult lighter air on the last two days.
Island Games competitor Katrina Williams handily made the Gold Fleet and performed consistently to tally 25th overall in spite of being over the starting line early in one race.
In the Silver Fleet, 16-year-old Zander Dill finished with two second places after enduring five capsizes in the breezy conditions.
He ended up sixth overall.
In the full rig Laser class, Rajae Woods did well to qualify for the Gold Fleet but struggled to eventually finish 52nd out of 53 boats.
In his first international regatta, Rockal Evans missed the Gold Fleet by three points, but posted four top 12 finishes to end up 13th in the 50-boat Silver Fleet.
Eleanor Gardner,14, found her rhythm with three seconds and a first in the second half of the regatta to place third in the Byte CII class of 18 competitors.
Team-mates Ryan Saraiva and Campbell Duffy followed closely in fourth and seventh.
