HWP names three scholarship winners
Elkeisha Caisey, Akilah Reid, and Princess Symonds have been chosen as this year's winners of HWP's annual scholarship that financially rewards students who are pursuing their educational goals, writes Lindsay Kelly.
The trio, all 19, will receive an equal share of $15,000, which will go towards the cost of their college tuition.
The Sir John Plowman Scholarship was established in 1999 in recognition of one of HWP's original partners. Sir John, a former United Bermuda Party Cabinet Minister, was committed to supporting young Bermudians in achieving their higher educational ambitions.
Elkeisha is a graduate of the Berkeley Institute and will begin her second year studying business administration at St. Lawrence College in Kingston, Ontario. Akilah is a graduate of Bermuda High School for Girls, and will also begin her second year at St. Lawrence College studying fitness and health/sports management. Princess, a graduate of the Nancy Campbell Collegiate Institute, based in London, Ontario, will study language, literacy and communication at the University of Manchester in northern England.
"I am pleased to present Elkeisha, Akilah, and Princess with this prestigious award," said Jonathan Brewin, president and CEO of HWP.
"It makes me especially proud to recognise the children of HWP employees with this scholarship and I expect that Sir John Plowman would feel the same. I wish them every success in the approaching academic year."
Michael Plowman, son of Sir John, said: "My father was a firm believer in the importance of education and he would be very proud today. Each of this year's recipients embody high standards which I am hopeful will carry over in their studies at university."
To be eligible for consideration by the scholarship selection committee, applicants must be the child of a full-time employee of the HWP Group living with their parents. Additional criteria such as proof of Bermudian status and current academic standing are also required.
