Sterritt claims first win of the year
to record his first win of the year in the Bermuda Bicycle Association's 25-mile road race at Southside on Sunday.
On a tough, demanding course of 10 two-and-a-half mile laps, over 50 riders lined up at the start. However, within the first few minutes the large field had split into groups under the pressure of a fast start with all the top riders, with the exception of race director Millington, present.
Jonathan Herring, in his first season as a category three rider, was busy early on as was Sterritt who had shown that he and Millington are the in-form riders so far this season. And it was not long before attacks were being made off the front in an attempt to break up the lead pack.
Sterritt made a solo move on one of the hills but was eventually pulled back by Hopkins and the field regrouped. On the next lap it was again Sterritt who broke free but this time with Herring and Tyler Butterfield, making his first appearance of the season.
As the three worked together, a chasing group of Hopkins, Jason Krupp, Earl Godfrey, Mike Lee and Dayna Henry formed. But with a clear lack of cohesion amongst these riders, the three leaders built on their lead. On the final lap, Sterritt and Herring broke free from Butterfield and were left to contest the sprint with Sterritt edging out the youngster. Both were timed at 1:04.59 with Butterfield third in 1:06.00.
