Man gave Police false name
A man who was stopped by Police and lied about his identity was ordered to pay all fines immediately or be sent to jail.
Devon Burrows, 27, of Farmstead Lane, in Sandys, pleaded guilty to riding an unlicensed motorbike, having no third party insurance, no driver's licence and perverting the course of justice on February 4, 2006.
Magistrates' Court heard that Burrows was stopped by Police at 12.40 a.m. in Pembroke because his cycle was displaying an expired licence.
When asked for his name Burrows gave Police the name Howard Mello and claimed he was born on August 13, 1978.
There were some warrants listed for Howard Mello, so Burrows was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station. While there he revealed his true identity to Police and was subsequently issued traffic tickets.
Burrows apologised in court and asked for the magistrate's leniency. "I apologise for my actions.
"A lot's changed since then obviously. I have a baby girl that I have to take care of and I ask for you to take that into consideration," he said.
The court heard that Burrows was summoned to appear in court on February 23, however he failed to appear.
There was another offence from 1997 listed on his record, for using a motorcycle without the consent of the owner.
Burrows denied the allegation and the charge was dismissed by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner.
Burrows was fined $250 or 25 days in default for the unlicensed motorbike, $1,000 or three months in default for having no third party insurance, $100 or ten days in default for having no drivers' licence and $400 for perverting the course of justice.
Mr. Warner ordered all fines to be paid immediately.
