Charities appeal for cash to help survivors
Charities on the Island are appealing for Bermudians to donate money to help Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake that rocked the impoverished country.
Hott 107.5, Bermuda Red Cross and the Salvation Army are all doing their part to assist the Caribbean Island and are asking you to do the same.
Ann Spencer-Arscott, Director of Bermuda Red Cross said they are accepting donations via two bank accounts and by mail.
"The International Red Cross is estimating that the quake affected three million people. The most urgent needs at this time are search and rescue, field hospitals, emergency health care, water purification, emergency shelter, logistics and telecommunications.
"Due to severe structural damage to the area, movement is severely restricted and security being reported as frail. A Red Cross team will lead a damage assessment together with the humanitarian aid office of the European Union. Money raised by the appeal will support the emergency response operations of the Haiti Red Cross."
Donations can be sent to the following bank accounts:
Bank of Bermuda— 010-187417-011
Bank of Butterfield — 20-006-060-663859-200
Members of the community can also call 236 8253 with their debit or credit card details or by mail to Bermuda Red Cross Haitian Earthquake Appeal Fund, Charleswood, 9 Berry Hill Road, Paget DV03.
Major Doug Lewis, of the Salvation Army, said: "The Salvation Army is presently on the ground and working in Haiti and has been since 1950. We operate 91 schools, three medical centres, two seniors homes, numerous feeding centres as well as 22 congregations.
"The Salvation Army's Territorial Headquarters is attempting to contact its workers in Haiti to ensure their safety and begin an assessment of immediate needs. The Salvation Army in Bermuda is ready to provide assistance in support of relief and recovery efforts undertaken by The Salvation Army in Haiti."
Thaao Dill, of Hott 107.5, explained what the radio station is doing to help, saying: "It's in keeping with our pattern of trying to react to these things as best as we can.
"We are looking for monetary donations. We have the registered charity that's designed for this. We can connect with the general population to help facilitate their outreach.
"The money we get will go directly to the Yele Haiti Foundation and Architecture for Humanity. Both organisations have an excellent track record to real success of meeting their charitable goals.
"Architecture for Humanity especially is a very exciting group to support because they have a real commitment to making people's donations count."
