Traffic officers made an extra effort to catch offenders during work which is already causing traffic chaos on North Shore Road near the Aquarium.

Island Construction are digging quarter-mile-long trenches to bury power cables which will avoid storm damage and prevent electricity supplies from cutting out in the future.

Traffic is restricted to one lane and controlled by traffic lights which are regulated by the estimated flow of traffic.

But some motorists have been driving through the red light, adding to the problems. A Police spokesman said that 30 drivers had already been booked and they would continue to monitor the situation.

He suggested people add 15 minutes onto their journey times while the work is in progress.
