West Pembroke Primary will debut a 'green' float

Bermuda Day is when culture comes to life in Bermuda, the day Bermudians celebrate their rich history and heritage, with a marathon, and a parade filled with majorettes, Gombeys and floats decorated with brightly coloured flowers.

To acknowledge this day, ten Primary Six students of West Pembroke Primary School have been working increasingly hard for one month on their float that they say is a 'surprise' to the Bermudian public.

The Bermuda 400 anniversary sparked the idea to create the float, as well as the theme entitled 'Hats off to Bermuda'.

This is not the school's first time creating a float for the Bermuda Day Parade; however, after a decade of being inactive, "The social studies department wanted to get in on the action," said Primary Six teacher Mrs. Deborah Wade.

In aid of the recent 'going green' effort, the float is made of all natural materials such as endemic plants, bay grape leaves and dried flowers.

The students are looking forward to unveiling their creation to the public, showing off their hard work and dedication.

Students from the school, in grades Primary Four through Six will be walking behind the float which will be driven by Mr. Wade.

Just as their theme states, "Hats off to Bermuda", hats off to West Pembroke Primary School for taking the initiative to make a contribution to Bermuda Day.
