Man blames thefts on drug habit

A drug addict stole his drinking partner?s money and phone and also raided the cash register at his workplace.

Libre Dingel Symonds, 25, admitted four theft offences when he appeared at Magistrates? Court, and also making off without paying a taxi.

Crown counsel Nicole Smith said on October 17, Symonds ?had a few drinks? with Richard Tavares.

When Mr. Tavares asked Symonds to change up some larger dollar bills, and handed him $150, Symonds asked to borrow his $400 Motorola RAZR cell phone to make an emergency call. He then disappeared with both.

The phone was later returned to Mr. Tavares in a damaged state, said Ms Smith. On October 19, Mr. Tavares was walking on Front Street when Symonds stole his wallet, with an unspecified amount of cash.

On October 26 Symonds was caught on surveillance camera taking money from the cash register totalling $179 from Pembroke Tile and Stone. On November 2 he did the same again, this time taking $99.

When he was arrested on November 21, Symonds admitted he stole money on both occasions from his employer to support his drug habit.

On September 21, said Ms Smith, he took a taxi ride to his St. John?s Road, Pembroke, home and made off without paying the $42 fare.

Symonds told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that he had a drug problem. Mr. Warner ordered reports including a drug report to be prepared on the defendant.

He adjourned the case until January 24 when he will pass sentence, granting Symonds $1,000 bail until then.
