Celebrating Kwanzaa
Saturday with a speech by a senior member of the Ausar Auset Society.
Ur Aua Hehi Metu Ra Enkamit is responsible for the development of the society in Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia and Bermuda, will lecture on African kingship and queen mother ship.
The Bermuda Ausar Auset Study Group's third annual kwanzaa celebration will be held at the Bermuda Industrial Union Headquarters from 7.30 p.m. on Saturday.
"I'll be speaking on African principles and how we can use these principles to achieve optimal functioning,'' Mr. Inkamit said.
He added: "The basic principle is that men are made in the likeness of God, by this we mean having like qualities.'' Ur Aua -- which means paramount king -- Enkamit said the Ausar Auset group teaches its members how to "access the God within their beings and transfer that essence to their lives''.
He added: "Kwanzaa was created to bring the African diaspora together in a communal celebration of our achievements and as a rallying point for charting our future paths.'' Mr. Enkamit said his speech will also focus on an African model of social relationships to improve the lives of black people in the diaspora.
Of Western conceptions of society, Mr. Enkamit said some have been good, but a grounding in African systems would make for a better society.
Mr. Enkamit added: "In the African system, these things are addressed in the structure of kingship.
"In order to rule, the leader must be capable of understanding the needs of the community and also have certain character qualities for leadership.'' Mr. Inkamit added: "I think this is important that the leadership in Bermuda should know these things.'' The Ausar Auset Society was founded in 1973 to provide an African based spiritual training for African descendants in the diaspora, which will enable them to live a moral life.
The Study Group will also host an introductory class on ancient Egyptian cosmology at Paget Primary School at 5 p.m. Sundays from January 17 to March 7. For more information contact Ammu Aakhu at 236-8311.
