Leaders Teachers face champions Renegades
This weekend sees local rugby action tomorrow at Police Field starting at 1.30 p.m. with a mouthwatering encounter between league leaders Teachers and last year's champions Renegades, writes Sean Field-Lament.
Both sides have been playing superb rugby of late and the contest will go a long way as to deciding who will win this year's league title.
Teachers are in rampant form and play a wide open attacking style. Led by former West Indies captain Bobby Hurdle, Teachers are hitting their stride at the right time with their back line of Chris Naylor, Jeff Sangster, David Porter, Chris Way, the ageless wonder Alvin Harvey, and the irrepressible Harry Andrews relishing their club's willingness to counter attack from any part of the field.
Renegades are smarting from a recent hard fought loss to their nemesis Mariners.
The half back tandem of Tom Healy and Greg Garside are gelling into a formidable partnership and the game promises to be a showpiece for local rugby.
Following that will be the ladies' games with the final game of the day being the Paul Marsden Memorial match between Mariners and Police.
Mariners are on high after beating Renegades for the second time this season and will be looking to take advantage of a Police team reeling from two consecutive maulings at the hands of Teachers and the Rest.
The Police are on a five-game losing streak and the tailspin has all but ended their league aspirations after a promising start.
The Marsden Memorial game will also mark the last local game for the ever popular Police player/coach Ken O'Shea.
Constable Paul Marsden died on National Stadium rugby pitch on January 22, 2006 after suffering a coronary attack. He was a popular figure both on and off the park.
Both Mariners and Police now play a memorial game in his honour as close to the date of his tragic death.
The Marsden family will be travelling from the UK to attend this annual event.
After the game there will be refreshments and a celebration of Paul's life in the Police Recreation Club.
