Bermuda batter US tourists
Hibernian RFC of Pennsylvania closed out their three match tour of Bermuda on a disappointing note when they were battered into submission by the Bermuda national team in Sunday's final match.
As the score indicated, the Americans were completely outplayed by the local side in a physical and often bad tempered encounter at National Sports Club.
The first half saw Phil Heaney turn initial Bermuda pressure into two successful penalty kick attempts. This was followed by debutant David Lunn Jr barging his way over from the base of the ruck for his first try, with Heaney adding the conversion.
Hibernian's forwards forced their way back into the match, using excellent driving and support play, but their backs could not match the standard, lacking imagination and continually kicking away good possession.
Immediate pressure by the home team following the restart allowed the forwards to supply quality ball to the back-line, which was moved wide where full-back Dominic Hardy used a missed pass move to put Heaney in for another score in the corner.
Still, the best was yet to come, as the large crowd was treated to the try of the match when scrum-half Gareth Davies broke blind from the ruck on the 10-metre line and rounded the cover defence to score in the corner what was a magnificent individual effort.
Meanwhile, referee Dennis Dwyer was kept busy, having to speak to both captains about numerous heated exchanges between the combatants.
Bermuda centre Dave Conway finished the match in style as he bolted through a gap from close range to score untouched and Heaney converted.
The loss was the only blemish on the tourists' tour after they had won two previous encounters against Mariners and a Bermuda Second XV.
