Bermuda Taxi Radio Cabs loses its operating licence
Bermuda Taxi Radio Cabs has lost its licence to run as a taxi dispatcher, but could still return with new owners.
Junior Minister of Tourism and Transport Marc Bean said that Government had made good on its threat to strip the dispatcher of its licence.
The Senator said: "As of May 31st, Radio Cabs licence has been suspended.
"The taxi drivers still have until the end of June to sign up with a different dispatching company."
Last night ZBM News reported that discussions had taken place involving the Bermuda Industrial Union, but that union boss Chris Furbert said that the details of those discussions would remain internal.
On May 7 a notice was placed in the Official Gazette informing the public that Radio Cabs' permit to operate a taxi dispatching service was going to be suspended.
This was due to the company failing to follow amendments to the Motor Car Act 1951, which forced the business to use a GPS dispatching system with every taxi equipped with GPS.
While the suspension will affect more than 160 taxi drivers, Sen. Bean said a change of ownership may soon give the company a new lease on life.
"I understand that several licenced taxi drivers are currently in the process of trying to acquire Radio Cabs," he said.
"It is my hope that we will find a solution that is beneficial for us all."
Radio Cabs CEO Eddie Darrell said that a meeting was scheduled to be held this morning.
Last month Mr. Darrell told The Royal Gazette that the company was in the process of being sold and that he hoped the sale would be complete before the licence could expire.
l While Radio Cabs is not currently operating, taxis are still available.
