Christ Church holds major recital
Christ Church, Devonshire is holding its 11th annual Recital in aid of the church's organ tomorrow at the City Hall theatre at 8 p.m.
Chairman of the church organ committee McNeil Warner began the series shortly after moving to the Devonshire congregation and becoming music director.
He said the recitals take a year of preparation and alternate between vocal and organ recitals.
"Our old pipe organ needs maintenance throughout the year,'' Mr. Warner said.
"We have a new one and the old one which needs the constant work.'' Mr. Warner added that the recital would not be as successful if it was not for others on the committee and other volunteers, adding that Ariel Sands and the Bermuda Florist provide vital support.
The artists in the recital will be Barbara Conrad, Gregory Hopkins, and Patricia Sage.
Barbara Conrad's singing has been called "arresting'', "thrilling in timbre'', and "bravura'' and has sung on three continents.
She portrayed the legendary opera singer Marian Anderson in an ABC Network made for television movie "Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years''.
She has recorded a critically acclaimed collection of Negro Spirituals with the Convent Avenue Baptist Church on the Naxos label.
And she has performed for His Holiness Pope John Paul II during his October 1995 visit to New York City.
Ms Conrad has been honoured by her alma mater, the University of Texas with the Barbara Conrad Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Fine Arts.
Temple University graduate Gregory Hopkins has won prizes at the Busseto "Verdi'' competition and the Mantova International competition in Italy.
He has sung Orff's "Carmen Burana'' with the Colorado Symphony and with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre.
Adjunct professor of music at Morgan State University , Baltimore, Maryland, he is also minister of music at Convent Avenue Baptist.
Singer, pianist, teacher, Patricia Sage is organist and music director of St.
Simeon Episcopal Church in the South Bronx, New York.
She has co-founded the American Opera Theatre which has a committment to giving workshop training to singers.
Ms Sage has been invited by Friedlind Wagner, granddaughter of Richard Wagner, to perform at the Bayreutherfestspiel Meisterklassen which takes place in conjunction with the Bayreuth Festival.
The performance includes the spiritual "Shall we gather at the River'' and Mendelssohn's "Ye People Rend your Hearts'' and "O Rest in the Lord''. Also in the programme are Hall Johnson's "My God is so high'' and Verdi's "Madre, non dormi'' from "Il Trovatore'' Act IV.
Organisers ask that all be seated no later than 7.45 p.m. General Admission is $20.
