Youth League to take action after attack on referee
Youth soccer bosses are to meet to discuss what action to take against the club whose under-15 players attacked a referee.
Now the junior season is over, a Shell Youth League disciplinary committee is to meet to discuss the incident, which followed the under-15 KO Cup match between PHC and Dandy Town on March 13.
PHC won 4-0 and after the match Town coach Jomar Wilkinson is alleged to have blocked the doorway of referee Gregory Smith's changing room to prevent him from getting out.
It is understood that one Town player aimed a kick at the match official as some of his team-mates confronted him and hurled abuse.
Youth League co-ordinator Dexter Smith confirmed he had received a report from the referee and the matter would be high on the agenda of the next disciplinary committee meeting.
"Having read the referee's report, it seems to have been a serious incident, though not gravely serious in my opinion, but serious enough to be taken to the next level,'' said Smith. "It is one of a number of disciplinary issues that have to be addressed and we want to deal with them at the same time.
"But first we wanted to get last Saturday's cup finals out of the way, as that means the season is over.'' Incidents of violence and intimidation against referees have been all too common in senior soccer this season and the junior game has been by no means untouched.
Perhaps the ugliest incident came in the November 21 Under-15 League clash between Hamilton Parish and PHC, when Gregory Smith was again the unfortunate referee.
Smith abandoned the match after just 15 minutes as he feared for the safety of the PHC players, because a spectator, named in the referee's report as senior player Leroy Robinson, allegedly attempted to incite violence on the pitch.
Robinson had started the game as a linesman, but threw down his flag in disgust after a few calls went against Parish.
After calling a halt, the referee was surrounded by Parish players, one of whom was reportedly wielding a bottle before he was restrained. The Parish Under-15 team were consequently placed under probation.
