Watson backing seven to 'hold their own'
Seven of Bermuda's top young athletes head to Florida today for the Pam-Am Junior Championships in Miramar.Bermuda's team's consists of Jeneko Place (100m, 200m and 4x100m), Jerquan Symonds (200m and 4x100m), Scott Clarke (100 and 4x100m), Bruce DeGrilla (long jump and 4x100m), Henry Stevens-Carty (800m), Shaquille Dill (800m) and Chas Smith (high jump and 4x100m).The team will be managed by Gina Evans and coached by Bill Euler and Xavier James.Bermuda Track and Field Association president Donna Watson said: "This is going to be a tough competition as the USA and Canada will be bringing their junior athletes to compete."I'm sure our athletes will hold their own and hopefully Jeneko will be able to compete at 100 percent to end his season."Meanwhile, former national coach Gerry Swan will also travel to Florida to officiate at the Championships.Swan, the only Bermudian with international IAAF Area Technical Official (ATO) qualification, was invited by the Pan American Athletic Commission to assist with issues of conduct of at the Championships.The international officials are from Bermuda, Brazil, Guatemala, Venezuela, Mexico and USA.The Championships is the biggest junior international meet in this hemisphere and will feature athletes from 44 countries. They will be held between July 22-24.Swan has worked at junior and senior international championships within the region.Last year, at the invitation of the local organising committee in Cayman Islands, he worked at the Carifta Games.Also last year, at the invitation of the North America Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Area Association, he was the Technical Delegate at the NACAC Under-23 Track and Field Championships in Florida.
