THE JOB with Ryan Smith
Age: 27
Role: Customer Relations Representative, BF&M
What is your job?
My job is to provide the best service to our customers relating to their personal insurance needs, ie home, marine, vehicle, travel. At the same time, I should be able to direct them to the right people in the right departments in relation to any other queries they may have outside of personal insurance.
What is your favourite part of the job?
Satisfying customers. Often customers come in and do what they have to do and are gone within five minutes. However, there are times when I might be helping someone with their car insurance, but once we are done they need assistance for their home or marine insurance. Instead of these customers having to get up and go back to the reception area to wait for another customer representative, I sit there and go through any questions they may have. You can almost feel the relief from the customer knowing that this one person can assist them with any of their personal insurance policies.
What is your least favourite part of the job?
I honestly don't have a least favourite part. BF&M has quarterly meetings for all the staff as well as monthly department staff meetings. Anything that we feel we need, can't do without, or simply might be preventing us from doing a better job, we are able to address.
What is your most interesting experience at work?
The people I meet in person or speak to over the phone. Often when I speak to people over the phone they think my name is Brian, so I try to correct them but in the end they still call me Brian.
I recall this one time I even emailed a customer the information they required and when they responded they still called me Brian, even though my automatic signature states what my name is. All I could do was smile. The office is filled with jokes and laughter so it is a great environment to be in.
What would you be doing otherwise?
Needless to say I would love to travel. However, while on the Island I would be fishing every chance I had. Now, by fishing I do not mean being a fisherman (I would leave that to the professionals).
I would simply throw my line over board and kick back and relax to take my mind away from everything. Taking fish home is always a plus too.
