Globalstar L.P.'s satellite frequency requests approved
The World Radio Conference (WRC) approved Globalstar L.P.'s satellite system frequency requests, the company said.
Globalstar Telecommunications Ltd., a Bermuda company, acts as general partner of Globalstar L.P.
The allocations, made at the WRC's month-long conference which concluded Friday in Switzerland, are considered a big step toward Globalstar's completing its international satellite telecommunications project.
Globalstar, an international partnership of telecommunications service providers and manufacturers, is developing a global mobile satellite system connecting users anywhere on the earth with telephone and cellular networks in individual countries or regions.
"The WRC decision is another milestone in Globalstar's on schedule plan which includes launch of the first of Globalstar's constellation of 48 low-earth orbiting satellites in 1997 and initial operation in 1998,'' the company said.
Coupled with the frequencies allocated in 1992, this completes the spectrum requirements for the entire Globalstar system.
"This decision, which enables Globalstar to complete its system as originally designed, validates the approach Globalstar has taken from the start,'' said company chairman and CEO Mr. Bernard Schwartz.
"Completion of the WRC spectrum allocation will now be followed by local authorising licences in countries around the world,'' he said.
Globalstar will bring low cost, mobile, and hand-held telephone services to the global community, as well as low cost fixed site telephone services to the areas of the world currently under served or not served by existing wireline and cellular telecommunications systems, the company said.
Sponsored by the International Telecommunication's Union (ITU) in Geneva, the 1995 WRC was attended by government representatives from over 150 countries.
The agreements reached regulate worldwide telecommunications frequencies use.
Based in San Jose, California, Globalstar was founded by Loral Corp. and QUALCOMM INC.
Globalstar shares traded at $27.25 mid-morning yesterday, up significantly from Thursday's close of $22.25.
