Woman who founded Style Bermuda becomes a New York editor
Style Bermuda founder Shiona Turini has achieved something many people with a love of fashion dream of — an editor position at a multi-million selling major fashion magazine.
Ms Turini was named senior accessories editor at Teen Vogue in December following a successful three-year stint as accessorised editor at W magazine.
She began her career working for Yves Saint Laurent as public relations coordinator where her responsibilities included celebrity dressing, press and event management. She was offered the position after interning with the public relations manager for a year, unpaid.
Ms Turini, who will be based in New York City, said: "I was very excited for the opportunity to work under the prestigious Vogue umbrella. My experience, hard work and dedication to my career has prepared me for a position like this and I'm eager to embrace it. The magazine is a leader in the industry and is true to its slogan: 'Fashion Starts Here'."
At Teen Vogue, Ms Turini will keep readers up to date on the latest trends and fashionable buys with her pages called Spree and will work on photo shoots and special projects.
She said: "As the head of the department, not only do I work on every fashion story and profile, I also have my own pages in each issue called 'Spree'. For photo shoots, I work closely with each stylist and find them the best accessories for their story, everything from shoes, bags and belts, to surfboards.
"It's my job to help them achieve their vision, get them what they want for the story, as well as introduce them to new brands and trends."
She continued: "For my own pages, each month I have to come up with a concept and find the most coveted 'must have' items for our readers to purchase at a range of price points. It's exciting to work with so many brands, from Louis Vuitton, Chanel or Nike to find the best bag, coolest sneaker, or that to-die-for piece of jewellery."
As for advice for Bermudians interested in the fashion world, the fashionista said: "I definitely would say to start at home. When I was in high school and even university, the options and opportunities in Bermuda were limited. This was the main reason why I started Style Bermuda.
"I wanted to offer Bermudians interested in fashion a platform to not only express themselves creatively, but also gain much needed experience for them to compete in the international fashion industry."
She said some of the interns have flown to New York and gone on tours at fashion houses such as Marc Jacobs and have attended fashion weeks.
Ms Turini is preparing for Fashion Week in New York and will then travel to cover the runway shows in Milan and Paris.
The fashionista started www.stylebermuda.com in 2007 and it has grown to be a popular Bermudian website.
Teen Vogue has a readership of six million. It is a Conde Nast publication bringing together style-conscious girls everywhere as the number one source of relevant fashion and beauty news.
