Courier company worker names Bermudian accused of sending hit list to Jamaica
One of two Bermudians charged with sending a hit list to Jamaica was named by an International Bonded Courier (IBC) employee in Supreme Court on Friday.
Kenneth Sinclair Durrant, 53, of Ord Road, Warwick and Javon Ernest Gardner, 27, of Crossfield Lane, Sandys have pleaded not guilty to conspiring with Vernon Berkley to kill Det. Sgt. Arthur Glasford, Det. Con. Terry Trott, Det. Con. Llewellyn Edwards, Sharrieff Wales and Dion Ford in Bermuda and elsewhere, on or before November 29, 2004.
In addition, the pair have denied attempting to pervert the course of justice on or before November 29.
If found guilty of conspiracy to murder the maximum sentence would be life.
In court on Thursday, Senior Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney alleged that Durrant and Gardner mailed a list of names of persons identified as witnesses for a trial which gave certain indications about which witnesses were to be killed.
On Friday, IBC worker Michael Lambert testified that company records showed Kenneth Durrant, of No. 60 Ord Road, Warwick sent a package to Vernon Berkley Wilmington, St. Thomas, Jamaica on November 29, 2004.
?Two gentlemen came into the store,? Mr. Lambert said on Friday. ?They said they wanted to send out a package.?
He said he gave them an airway bill to sign in order to confirm Berkley?s address and they signed it.
?I asked them what it was and they said it was a message,? he said.
Under Mr. Mahoney?s questioning, Mr. Lambert said an IBC airway bill which was shown to the jury was similar to the one he handed two men in 2004.
However, under cross-examination by Durrant?s lawyer John Perry QC, Mr. Lambert said he was not sure if he could identify Durrant.
Mr. Perry QC also showed that Durrant had sent three other letters to Jamaica by IBC between February 2004 and the day in question.
And it showed that one the same day Durrant sent a letter to Berkley in Jamaica he also sent a second package ? but this time containing a T-shirt.
He also sent two letters at IBC to Ms Barbara Comb of No. 39 McKindley Crescent, Kingston, Jamaica on February 3, 2004 and April 27, 2004.
Durrant is also represented by Craig Attridge and Gardner is represented by Ms Pearman and Charles Richardson.
Crown counsel Cindy Clarke will also be prosecuting the case before Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves.
The trial continues today.
