The team is expected to be made up of at least four men and three women and the athletes chosen will be selected based on their performances during the 1993 Federal Express/Continental Airlines Cross-Country series.

Athletes do not have to participate in a set number of events but should take part in the last two series events, which are standard IAAF recommended distance races of six kilometres for women and 12 kilometres for men.

Anyone interested in going to Nassau are asked to contact George Sutherland at 238-0566 before November 20. Competitors must be Bermuda nationals.

Athletes for this team must take part in a minimum of five of the seven events to be eligible for selection. They, however, are not required to be Bermuda nationals.

BASKETBALL BAS Local players Ijumo Hayward and Kevin Stovell today fly out for trials with Continental Basketball Association team Rapid City Thrillers in South Dakota.

This follows a failed bid by the pair two weeks ago with another semi-professional club, Rockford Lightning.

However, Hayward said that he was confident of being able to do better and possibly earn a spot this time.

"The initial shock won't happen this time and I can go out and play to my full potential,'' said Hayward, a candidate for the shooting guard position.

"I feel confident and know what is expected.

"Playing against them before I didn't find that their talents outclassed ours. We were pretty much on par.'' The trials take place tomorrow and Sunday for free agents and those that are able to impress could be invited back for a veterans' camp.

The sister-and-brother team, playing together for the first time in nearly five years, ran off eight straight games before the Pamplins broke Stuart at deuce in the ninth game. But the tournament's top mixed doubles pair immediately broke back and ran out the match losing only six more points.

In singles play, women's top seed Gill Butterfield trounced Alexa Petty 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals.

Butterfield ran off nine straight games for a 6-0 and 3-0 lead before Petty broke at 15 for her only moment of glory in the 45-minute contest. But the top seed is expected to be stretched to the limit in her semifinal match-up against the winner of the game between Lavern Jones and Diane Olchowik.
