Guest worker charged in hit-and-run accident

A Smith?s man charged with knocking down a cyclist while he was drunk, may have lost his job as a result.

Expatriate worker William Roberts, from Birmingham, Alabama, who has lived in Bermuda for 17 years, was charged last week after a hit-and-run accident resulted in the serious injury of an Island lawyer.

The CableVision employee, who lives at Skyline Drive, was charged last week with a hit-and-run accident which saw a local lawyer seriously injured. As a result CableVision has suspended him pending the outcome of the case.

In the plea session of Magistrates? Court, Roberts was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to the pedal cyclist while driving a CableVision on Court Street on January 26 while his ability was impaired by alcohol or a drug.

He was also charged with impaired driving, failing to stop after being involved in an accident and dangerous driving.

The charges are indictable and therefore he was not allowed to plea. The case will be heard in Supreme Court.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner released Roberts on $10,000 bail with one surety and ordered him to surrender his travel documents and report to Hamilton Police Station every Wednesday and Saturday.

He will re-appear in court for mention on February 11.
