Guest worker?s novel way to say ?thank you, Bermuda?
Thanks to a generous donation by a local businessman, a Dellwood Middle School pupil will be the first of many to receive free tuition at The Reading Clinic in Hamilton.
Dominique Mayho, 11, is the first recipient of The Bank of Bermuda Limited Scholarship which came about following a personal donation of $25,000 by Bruce Woolley, the General Counsel for the Bank of Bermuda, towards an annual reading scholarship.
Both the Bank of Bermuda and the Bank of Bermuda Foundation matched Mr. Woolley's donation, bringing the total donation to $75,000.
The funds for the scholarship will be donated directly to The Reading Clinic's Endowment Fund and the interest generated from the donation will provide the funding for one annual scholarship for reading tuition.
A Canadian resident of Bermuda and employee of the bank since October, 2000, Mr. Woolley is scheduled to leave the Island to pursue other career opportunities.
But he said that he felt it was important to give something back to the Bermuda community that has been his "home" for almost five years.
"The ability to read well is a crucial key to success. I wanted to establish the scholarship to help provide opportunities to those who wish to improve their reading skills and who might not otherwise be able to do so," he said.
