Holland America to double Bermuda cruises in 2010
Holland America Line will more than double its Bermuda cruises in 2010 from 11 to 24, the group announced yesterday.
The 1,350-guest Veendam will visit Hamilton and St. George's from April to October, staying two-and-a-half days in each port.
Executive vice president Richard Meadows said in a statement: "This is a wonderful development for Holland America Line and Bermuda.
"We are thrilled to homeport a ship in New York City to sail to Bermuda and our extended season to the islands will be very exciting to our guests."
Veendam is a premium mid-sized ship, meaning it can navigate the narrow entrances to Bermuda's harbours.
Premier and Tourism Minister Ewart Brown said in a statement released after Holland America Line's announcement: "We were thrilled to get Holland America back to Bermuda for ten visits, so naturally we are ecstatic about 24. It's another vote of confidence in our island as a premier vacation destination and more proof of our team's hard work.
"It has been increasingly difficult in this part of the world to arrange itineraries for cruise ships small enough to visit Hamilton and St. George's. The Veendam at 720 feet is a perfect fit."
