Series winners book trip to US camp
of the six age group winners were determined last weekend after the penultimate event in the KPMG Junior Road Running Series.
In the girls 13-15 age group the anticipated showdown between Shardae Whitter and Tiffany Eatherley never materialised. Whitter needed to win the race to have a chance of overtaking Eatherley but the latter cruised in a comfortable winner to make it four wins out of four -- albeit one of those was shared with Whitter.
In the 13-15 boys, Mark Morrison had an equally comfortable victory as Henry Talbot, who has pressed him hard all season, did not take part. Morrison maintained his 100 percent winning record and like Eatherley has booked his place on an all-expenses paid trip to a running camp in the US in July.
The 11-12 girls promised some excitement after Flora Duffy, winner of the first two races was beaten into third place in the Ocean Spray, and needed to come first to ensure her place on the trip. Duffy, however, was equal to the task and proved too strong for Jenny Palmer and the fast improving Latroya Darrell.
Darrell held off Palmer to take second place and can pip her to the overall runner's-up spot if she finishes ahead of her in the final race on April 17.
The one age group that is still to be determined is the boys' 11-12. Terrance Dill had a disappointing third in the opening race of the series but bounced back to win the next two. In the latest race, however, he suffered from the start and eventually pulled out leaving the door open for Chayce Smith.
Smith, who won the first race of the series, now also has two wins and the pair will go head to head next month to decide the winner of the group.
One of the most exciting finishes of the season came in the boys' 8-10 age group as Cody Lima, who had comfortably won the first three races, found himself under pressure from the fast improving Carlo Paynter.
In the end it came down to a sprint finish and with the line judge unable to split them they were awarded joint first place. Lima only needed a second to be assured of winning the series.
As expected, Jessica Palmer dominated the girls' 8-10 division to record her fourth straight triumph in the series. Like her sister Jenny, Jessica is one of a number of girls beginning to make their mark in junior running circles.
The final race of the series will be run on the track at the BTFA Track Meet on April 17.
